Here Come The Boys In Green
After a nerve wracking draw in our opening game against Sweden and a disappointing defeat at the hands of Belgium, Ireland’s EURO 2016 dreams looked to be done & dusted . A nerve wracking 1-1 draw opening game against Sweden was followed by a disappointing 0-3 defeat to Belgium.
While the Boys in Green still had a slim chance of qualifying for the knockout stages, they first needed to overcome a strong Italian side in Lille.
Coming into to the game, few gave Ireland a chance with many suggesting that the team simply weren’t good enough to progress. However, these concerns were quickly forgotten during the game as Martin O’Neill’s men came out fighting from the outset and were arguably the better side.
However, Ireland couldn’t break down the stubborn Italian defence and looked to be crashing out. That was until the 85th minute when Robbie Brady powered a header past Gianluigi Buffon in the Italy goal to break the deadlock.
The remaining few minutes felt like an eternity as Ireland fought like tigers to control their lead. This was followed by joyous scenes as the final whistle blew and Ireland claimed one of the most famous victories in our history.
The victory sent Ireland through by virtue of the new third place criteria and set up a grudge match against the hosts and old foes France in Paris.The game will present the perfect chance to avenge the infamous Thierry Henry handball incident in 2009 which arguably cost us a place in the 2010 World Cup.
